Faced with an escalating pattern of verbal and emotional abusive, I fled my marriage of 8 years quite abruptly on February 29, 2016. I pressed my D800e against my face, photojournalism as method of detachment from the bewildering chaos unfolding before me. My camera became the safety glass shielding me as I frantically gathered my possessions, and dragged these pieces of my life through a series of lonely, sometimes grim motel rooms in which my 73 year old mother and I quietly camped as she drove us halfway across the United States to the shelter of my childhood home, with my 2 medically sensitive elderly cats in tow. My traumatized, pharmaceutically sedated brain tidily deleted most of this experience from my memory.
